LINDSAY’S PICKS

  • May 11 – Here’s To Merle (Merle Haggard Tribute) at Rhythm Room
Pay tribute to the outlaw with the smooth croon. Some of the best country locals in town remember Merle Haggard.
  • May 12 – John Dixon’s 70th Birthday Bash at Crescent Ballroom
Johnny D is an Arizona Treasure! A musical historian, this man knows more and owns more AZ music than anyone you know. Let’s celebrate his birthday with some of Phoenix’s greatest players. Featuring Suicide Kings, Sugar Thieves, Jon Rauhouse, Al Perry, DJentrification and more. FREE show!
  • May 18 – Psychic Temple & Slow Moses at The Newton
I’m a big fan of Chris Schlarb and this new Psychic Temple record. There somethings for everyone here, with hints of folk, americana, jazz, pop and 70s rock. Plus an excuse to see a show at a unique venue is worth getting out of the house!

DARIO’S PICKS

  • May 18 – Psychic Temple & Slow Moses at The Newton
Asthmatic Kitty recording artist Psychic Temple returns to the Valley with all the experimentation and exploration of their subsequent releases and some new material that expands into the realm of more cohesive song structures. The new sound incorporates a bit of that classic americana rock n roll, reminiscent of Graham Parsons and the Byrds, with a tasteful use of some 70s pop/jazz like progressions and enough Big Star power pop to get you moving. Put in the context of newer artists, Psychic Temple can hold their own along with artists like Father John Misty, Phosphorescent, Fleet Foxes and Devendra Banhart. Opening the show is Phoenix Psych-folk outfit Slow Moses
  • May 21 – Damien Jurado & The Heavy Light at Valley Bar
This guy just keeps rolling out exactly the kind of albums I’m looking for, all spacey and honest with swirling, reverb drenched accompaniment layered tastefully over his tunes. Last time he rolled through town, I have to admit, I was a little disappointed when I learned it would just be him and his guitar. I learned a valuable lesson about his music, that night. All that production on his albums only serves to compliment what he does, all by himself. He doesn’t need a band of musicians to make his songs work. But, boy am I excited to see what the band will do.
  • May 22 – The Fruit Bats at Valley Bar
Haven’t Seen Fruit Bats since they played Modified some number of years ago. Their album Mouthfuls still stands in my “top 20” of albums I’ve ever enjoyed. Since then, they have continued to release solid albums that hold all the best parts of their earliest recordings, while they cover new ground with the same amount of artistry and exploration. They are releasing a new album on May 13th, which you can sample a song or two online. I’m just as excited to hear the new tunes, live, as I am the old ones.

JEFF’S PICKS

  • May 21 – Damien Jurado & The Heavy Light at Valley Bar
The new Damien Jurado album is fantastic and I cannot wait to see him perform the new material with his band (including Courtney Marie Andrews)!
  • May 22 – Mrs Magician at The Rebel Lounge
Very excited to have the opportunity to open for Mrs Magician – an incredible surf / garage rock group from San Diego. Finally got to see these guys at Viva Phx a couple months ago and they put on an excellent set. I’m stoked to see them at Rebel!
  • May 27 – Lil Bobby Jr and The Horsey House Band & Friends with Gene Tripp at Stinkweeds
Really looking forward to the next show inside Stinkweeds! Just getting familiar with Lil Bobby Jr’s band and I just saw Gene Tripp a couple weeks ago, and I think this show will be the perfect vibe for a nighttime in-store – mellow, washed out folk / country. Come celebrate the new Lil Bobby Jr album!
