Godspeed You! Black Emperor – NO TITLE AS OF 13 FEBRUARY 2024 28,340 DEAD CD/LP (Constellation)
NO TITLE AS OF 13 FEBRUARY 2024 28,340 DEAD is the fifth post-reunion album (and ninth overall) from the elusive post-rock pioneers Godspeed You! Black Emperor, out today via Constellation Records.
Leon Bridges – Leon CD/LP (Columbia)
Leon is the highly anticipated fourth album from Grammy Award-winning recording artist, songwriter, and performer Leon Bridges. With 13 tracks featuring Leon’s signature storytelling and a unique blend of organic genre alchemy, Leon is his most poignant, powerful, and personal work to date. He takes fans on a trip through the heart of Ft. Worth he knows best, the things he holds dear, and the people and places that shaped him. Featuring production by Ian Fitchuk (Beyonce, Noah Kahan), Daniel Tashian (Kacey Musgraves), and Tyler Johnson (Harry Styles, Miley Cyrus), Leon describes the album as “somewhat of a self-portrait… I’m excited to share these stories about my home, about nostalgia, about my upbringing, about where I’m from, with all of you. I hope this music brings you back to your roots and your journey.”
Aphex Twin – Selected Ambient Works Volume II [Expanded Edition] (Warp)
Selected Ambient Works Volume II (Expanded Edition) releases on Oct 4, 2024, celebrating the original album’s 30th anniversary. Written when Aphex Twin (Richard D. James) was in his early 20s, the album gained critical acclaim both upon release and retrospectively (10/10 Pitchfork review, #2 Best Ambient Album of All Time, 4 star Rolling Stone review +more). Aphex Twin and SAW II’s influence continues to grow and take new meaning across generations.
Thee Sacred Souls – Got A Story To Tell CD/LP (Daptone)
Like their debut, Got A Story To Tell was recorded and produced by Gabriel Roth at Penrose Recorders, Daptone’s studio in Riverside, CA. Written in the throes of supporting their 2022 album – which was met with tremendous excitement and major touring that brought them across the world – it represents a crucible for the band. It led to a demanding and intense period, but they came out stronger and more together on the other side. They tapped into the explosion of creativity that came with it to make their best songs yet. Got A Story To Tell was written by founding members Alejandro Garcia, Salvador Samano and Josh Lane. Garcia (drums, guitar), Samano (bass, drums) and Lane (vocals) recorded the album, with additional horn, string, percussion, organ players and background vocalists. Special guests include Larry Rendon on saxophone, an original member of Thee Midniters, the East LA band from the ‘60s that made history as one of the first Chicano bands to have a major hit in the U.S. (and in part what inspired Thee Sacred Souls’ band name).
The Hard Quartet – Hard Quartet CD/LP (Matador)
New supergroup composed of Emmett Kelly, Stephen Malkmus, Matt Sweeney, and Jim White.
The Hard Quartet is a band. But what is a band? A band, perhaps, can be thought of as a body, a corpus, in which physically discrete lifeforms comprise a chimera that shrieks with one voice. In this particular band, which is one of millions in the world today, four players selflessly merge, become musical, and emit rock ‘n’ roll that is familiar but new, warm but icy, melodic but Sphinx-like in its seductive and subtle riddles… essentially, The Hard Quartet has leveled, cultivated, and made lush an entirely new steppe in the ecosystem of guitar-bass-drums-voice agriculture.
Caribou – Honey CD/LP (Merge)
Upon first listen, two things about Honey are immediately clear: First, it is an entirely new kind of Caribou record. Second, in being an entirely new kind of Caribou record, it is keeping with Dan Snaith’s discography, each new album marked by radical thematic and sonic shifts. Honey is not a departure from the Caribou we’ve known up to this point but rather the product of a lifetime spent listening to and crafting immaculate pop music. After two intensely personal Caribou albums (Suddenly and the Grammy-nominated Our Love), Snaith now pulls himself away a little in search of music that isn’t about any one person and is relatable to everybody. It also brings Snaith’s two personas, Caribou and Daphni, closer together than ever before. On Honey, Snaith fuses their strengths into a record that grabs you and moves you like Daphni before it uplifts you like Caribou. Huge dancefloor tracks twinkle and surprise in a way only Snaith’s productions can, with a freshness that defines an artist who is too excited by music-making to ever truly settle into any one sound.
Geordie Greep – The New Sound CD/LP (Rough Trade)
Geordie Wade Greep was the frontman and lead guitarist of the rock band Black Midi. Geordie’s debut solo album boasts a brand of high quality, all-embracing alternative pop fun, walking the line between the ridiculous and brilliant with a teflon-coated aplomb. How the record came about is a thing to marvel at. Over thirty session musicians were involved in its making, on two continents. Greep says, “Half of the tracks were done in Brazil, with local musicians pulled together at the last minute. They’d never heard anything I’d done before, they were just interested in the demos I’d made. The tracking was all done in one, maybe two days.” Street life is all around The New Sound: the listener is thrown into a world of cafes, bars, rented rooms, cabarets, and strange museums. Here we see our heroes carry out a series of naughty assignments, military cosplay, or socio-economic triumphs. The lines between parody and sermon are often blurred. The urbane romantic fantasy of single ‘Holy Holy’ tells the story of an imaginary liaison in a nightclub, soundtracked by ‘noughties indie chords and bravura Latin big band arrangements – including a three-piano attack. Brass, wah-wah pedal and bass stabs, choruses and polyrhythms, all fizz and tumble around the place creating a sense of excitement and expectation. Tracks often oscillate from whispers to shouts and start and end on a bang. The spirit of Greep’s increasingly febrile and furtive soliloquies conjure up both Franks (Zappa & Sinatra), with a side of Scott Walker.
The Smile – Cutouts CD/LP (XL)
The trio – Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood and Tom Skinner – debuted several songs from Cutouts during The Smile’s UK tour in March. Cutouts features 10 new-tracks and is produced by Sam Petts-Davies. It’s the band’s third studio album following Wall of Eyes, released in January, and the trio’s 2022 debut album A Light For Attracting Attention. Cutouts was recorded in Oxford and at Abbey Road Studios during the same period of time as Wall Of Eyes. The album features string arrangements by the London Contemporary Orchestra and the album art was painted during the recording process by Stanley Donwood and Thom Yorke. This is the second studio album release from The Smile in under a year. In January, Wall Of Eyes charted at #3 on the UK album charts, receiving “Best Album of the Year so far” praise from Pitchfork, The Needle Drop, Consequence, Brooklyn Vegan, Treblezine and Spin.
Blood Incantation – Absolute Elsewhere LP (Century Media)
Blood Incantation’s Absolute Elsewhere is unlike anything you’ve ever heard before. Few can claim a sonic watershed as readily as the Denver, Colorado quartet. At roughly 45 minutes, the two compositions that make up this album are as confounding as they are engaging in their scope, melding the 70’s prog leanings of Tangerine Dream (whose Thorsten Quaesching appears on “The Stargate [Tablet II]”) with the deathly intent of Morbid Angel. Blood Incantation has already proven themselves, perfecting progressive death metal with 2019’s Hidden History of the Human Race while branching out into exclusively synth-driven soundtrack territory with 2022’s Timewave Zero. Now, with Absolute Elsewhere, which takes its title from the mid-70’s prog collective (best known as a celestial stopover for King Crimson drummer, Bill Bruford), Blood Incantation are leaving the notion of genre behind and writing a new language for extreme music itself.
Talk Talk – It’s My Life 40th Anniversary [Reissue/1984] (Rhino)
Half-speed master. Originally released in February 1984, It’s My Life is the band’s second album and followed the 1982 release of their debut The Party’s Over which initially received moderate success in the UK reaching number 21 in the UK chart and finding some global success. – By the time they came to writing and recording It’s My Life the band had gone from the four piece to a three with Simon Brenner leaving the band. The album initially found considerable international success. “Such A Shame,” the album’s first single was a top 10 hit across Europe and the album’s title track entered global Top 40’s including in the US.
Broadcast – Distant Call CD/LP (Warp)
Free commemorative Broadcast discography posters, while supplies last!
Distant Call is a collection of early demos of songs that would subsequently appear as finished productions on the albums Haha Sound, Tender Buttons and The Future Crayon. The album also includes two songs discovered by James after Trish’s passing: “Come Back To Me” and “Please Call To Book”. These were her response to Broadcast’s 2006 ‘Let’s Write A Song’ project, where fans were asked to submit lyrics on a postcard which would then be worked into a finished song. Distant Call is a closing of the door on Broadcast and will be the last release from the band.
Drug Church – Prude LP (Pure Noise)
For over a decade, Drug Church have been building a very strong case that they’re the best loud guitar band in the game; their fifth full-length Prude – a 28-minute blast of aggression, melody, irreverence, and genuine heart-feels like the undeniable proof. The album is so downright satisfying it tricks you into thinking there’s nothing all that surprising about a difficult-to-pigeonhole punk band from Albany, NY.
Anna Butterss – Mighty Vertebrate CD/LP (International Anthem)
Mighty Vertebrate is the International Anthem leader debut from Adelaide, Australia-born bassist and composer Anna Butterss. Butterss has steadily become a first-call for tour and studio work since moving to Los Angeles (after a stint in Bloomington, Indiana) in 2014. They’ve racked up credits with notables across the indie, jazz, and pop worlds alike – including Makaya McCraven, Phoebe Bridgers, Jason Isbell, Andrew Bird, and Daniel Villarreal – but their most notable contributions to the burgeoning West Coast creative music scene have been as a core member of both Jeff Parker’s ETA IVtet and rising proto-trance supergroup SML, who Pitchfork says “represents the thrilling next phase of a vibrant L.A. community.”
Efterklang – Things We Have In Common CD/LP (City Slang)
Danish band Efterklang returns with their seventh studio album Things We Have In Common. An album about friendship, belonging, faith and understanding, themes which are palpable in the music, which is gentle and uplifting, healing and rousing. Efterklang has become an open community with three permanent members: Mads Brauer, Casper Clausen and Rasmus Stolberg. On this album the core trio re-connected with their old friend and founding Efterklang member Rune Mølgaard who left the band in 2007 to join the Mormon church, and ultimately withdrew from the church in 2022. His profound spiritual journey significantly influences the album’s content and tone, on which he has co-written seven of the nine songs. Things We Have In Common coincides with the 20th anniversary of the band’s debut album, and presents 2 decades of collaboration, exploration, evolution and reconnection.
Pharmakon – Maggot Mass CD/LP (Sacred Bones)
Maggot Mass, the fifth full-length album by Pharmakon on Sacred Bones Records, marks the project’s return after a five-year hiatus. This album signifies a departure from the original rules and structures established by Margaret Chardiet for Pharmakon, evolving into a new form. It retains the project’s experimental roots in power electronics and noise while incorporating industrial and punk influences. The album stems from a profound disgust with humanity’s dysfunctional relationship with the environment and other life forms. It explores the loneliness resulting from this broken bond and challenges us to acknowledge our personal and systemic responsibility. Pharmakon is here imagining a path where the final act is to give back what was received from creation, offering our lives and deaths to sustain existence.
Kate Bollinger – Songs From A Thousand Frames Of Mind CD/LP (Ghostly)
On Songs From A Thousand Frames Of Mind, the kaleidoscopic full-length debut from Kate Bollinger, entire worlds lie in the small details. “When I’m recording a song,” the Charlottesville-born, Los Angeles-based songwriter observes, “my indication of whether it’s worth pursuing is if I’m seeing a movie in my head to go along with it.” Blending classic pop songcraft with scrappy punk instincts, Bollinger casts a collage-like vision that’s instantly memorable and uniquely mystifying. Ranging from homespun folk songs to warmly rendered psychedelic rock—like early Rolling Stones as fronted by Hope Sandoval—the resulting album can feel like flipping through your coolest friend’s record collection, finding a new favorite song with each discovery.
Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit – Live At The Ryman Volume 2 LP (Southeastern)
Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit follow up 2018’s Live from the Ryman with a second volume of live recordings from their annual residency at The Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN. Live from the Ryman Vol. 2 features favorites from Weathervanes and Reunions recorded in 2022 & 2023 as well as “The Last Song I Will Write” (2019) and a cover of Tom Petty’s “Room at the Top” (2017).
Yasmin Williams – Acadia CD/LP (Nonesuch)
The album, Yasmin Williams’ Nonesuch debut and her most sonically expansive work to date, comprises nine original, mostly instrumental, tracks written and produced by Williams, and features her on various guitars, banjo, calabash drum, tap shoes, and kora. Williams is joined on the album by an eclectic cast of collaborators-including Immanuel Wilkins on saxophone, Dom Flemons on rhythm bones, Aoife O’Donovan on vocals, William Tyler on guitar, and many others-creating a folk music that reflects the wide range of musical influences that have inspired her throughout her life

This will prevent the manufacture of more than 25 metric tonnes of virgin plastic, and provide an 85% reduction in manufacturing process CO2 emissions/kg compared to traditional 140g vinyl.
Chubby and The Gang – And Then There Was… CD/LP (Flatspot)
Charlie Manning is Chubby and The Gang. The 30 something year old born and bred Londoner, kicked off the project in 2019 with the intention of blending hardcore punk with the most infectious elements of ‘70s rock n roll and doo-wop. Charlie brought in a “gang” of rotating instrumentalists performing on the albums Speed Kills (2020) and The Mutt’s Nuts (2021), both released through Partisan Records. Fast forward to now and Chubby and the Gang joins long-running hardcore label Flatspot Records for the release of the upcoming album, And Then There Was… The album is 16 songs written and performed by Charlie, produced by Jonah Falco, and recorded and mixed by James Atckinson. It’s a mix of control and chaos, love and loneliness, rage and vulnerability. The songs scream to be heard in a live setting, but feel just as at home playing over the speakers of a dimly lit local pub. “

Liquid Liquid – Bellhead b/w Optimo 12” (DFA)
Liquid Liquid loom large for many – their classic run of EPs on 99 Records has gotten a second, third, and fourth life thanks to devout fans like the Beastie Boys, LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy, and Domino’s Laurence Bell. (This to say nothing of the fact that one of rap’s all time classics – Melle Mel’s “White Lines” – is based around their song “Cavern.) This new double a-side single from Murphy’s own DFA features a torrential version of “Bellhead” he co-produced in 2004 alongside a completely new version of the Liquids classic “Optimo” by Glaswegian party crew Optimo (Espacio).
Kato Hideki and Kramer – The Walk (Shimmy Disc)
Kato Hideki’s Statement: “The Walk is the first collaboration between me and my brother from another mother, Kramer. We started working together in the late summer in 2023, discussing the thematics and the sonic palette of the album. We shared strong connections with the writings by Robert Walser and Basho – both of them walked, dreamed, lived and died on the road. Ambient music was our natural plane for us to transduce the power of their literature into our music as signifiers. Neither of us imagined just to make “another ambient record”, nor a direct translation of their writings. My instinct was to use various modal colors with modulation – slow yet structured music that sounds deceivingly similar to ambient music. Kramer’s genius was apparent to me: his ability to elaborate the music as a composer / musician with his keen ears; to frame the album conceptually, sonically and musically as a producer. What you hear in this album is a true collaboration between two artists who trusted each other to let the music transcend. Here you have it, enjoy YOUR walk – dream, live and die well!
Hugo Largo – Huge, Large and Electric: Hugo Largo 1984-1991 LP (Missing Piece)
LP now, CD next week. Forty years after their formation, no music sounds quite like Hugo Largo. Their hushed, majestic atmosphere-which veers toward ambient dream-pop but emerged from the noisy No Wave scene of 1980s New York-is the result of open-ended exploration and pure vision, an embrace of mystery and a refusal to compromise. Even the basic components of the band-two bassists (Tim Sommer and Adam Peacock), a violinist (Hahn Rowe), and a one-of-a-kind powerhouse vocalist (Mimi Goese)-set them apart from any peers or contemporaries. “The very best reason to form a band,” Sommer reflects, “is because you’re looking through your music collection and you can’t find what you want to hear.”
Finneas – For Cryin’ Out Loud! CD/LP (OYOY)
[Available on gold and green bio-vinyl colorways] Multiple GRAMMY and Academy Award-winning artist, songwriter and producer, Finneas returns with For Cryin’ Out Loud! his second studio album. Finneas’ self-produced solo album was born out of a series of live studio sessions in Los Angeles, bringing together some of his closest friends and peers into one room. In contrast to his debut album OPTIMIST, which featured instrumentals written and performed solely by the artist himself, For Cryin’ Out Loud! sees Finneas expand his creative horizons to a classic studio/band environment, freeing Finneas and ultimately resulting in his most uplifting and raw body of work to date. For Cryin’ Out Loud! follows the release of his sister Billie Eilish’s third studio album, HIT ME HARD AND SOFT, which has further cemented him as one of the most critically acclaimed, award-winning producers and songwriters of his generation. LP Packaging: Gold BioVinyl LP is 100% recyclable vinyl.
Mclusky – The Difference Between Me and You Is That I’m Not on Fire [Reissue/2004] (Too Pure)
Twenty years ago, mclusky released their third album, The Difference Between Me and You Is That I’m Not on Fire via Too Pure. In the years since, their legend has only grown, proved by their recent sold-out tour dates and announcement of a new album. Alternative Press described them as “a smash up between the scabrous rock noise of the Jesus Lizard and the jagged rhythms and open spaces of Gang Of Four”. Originally produced by the late, great Steve Albini, this reissue has been mastered by his close friend and Shellac bandmate, Bob Weston.
Cumgirl8 – The 8th Cumming CD/LP (4AD)
Like a scantily clad Creature from the Black Lagoon, Manhattan four-piece cumgirl8 has emerged from their primordial goo, resurrecting in striking full colour with a highly- anticipated announcement of new music. After coming-of-age with their introductory self-titled EP (2020), experiencing their own end with their RIPcumgirl8 EP (2021), and witnessing a twisted vision of the afterlife through their first EP on 4AD phantasea pharm (2023), cumgirl8 is now on the cusp of their 8th cumming by way of their long-awaited debut LP of that name.
Toe – Songs Ideas We Forgot [Reissue/2003] LP (Topshelf)

The band has formally played with this lineup since their inception in 1998. The vast majority of the music is instrumental and features the swift, agile drumming of Takashi. The band is also known for melodic, clean guitar, often employing the juxtaposition of electric and acoustic. While the compositions feature the repetition of typical rock motifs, the subtle changes in beat and rhythm form a unique rhythmic dialect. The band has consistently expanded their sound throughout their musical tenure by incorporating singing, rhodes piano, mallet percussion, and electronic production elements.
Animal Collective – Sung Tongs 20th Anniversary [Reissue/2004] (Domino)
