LINDSAY’S PICKS
- September 15 – Gardens & Villa at Crescent Ballroom
Love the quriky aesthetics of this band. Plus when do you get to see flute played live with electronics?
- September 20 – Old 97s & Salim Nourallah at Crescent Ballroom
Woah SALIM NOURALLAH!! Never thought I’d see that name since I fell for his album back in the Tempe Stinkweeds days. Also, yes Old 97s back in Phoenix is a big deal!
- September 21 – Destroyer & Laetitia Satier at Crescent Ballroom
Power bill! For those of you going to see Mr Destroyer Mysterion, your night just improved with the addition of Laetitia Sadier. Highly recommend this one, as well as the new Destroyer record.
- September 22 – Mimicking Birds at Valley Bar
Love the weird, haunting, folky vibe of this band. Think Timber Timbre mixed with Chad Vangaalen.
DARIO’S PICKS
- September 5 – Courtney Marie Andrews at Valley Bar
When Courtney was living and playing in town, I always believed she would be one of those musicians to break beyond “local.” If you follow her progress, you’ll see that it’s all happening for her. Being featured on multiple video blogs and radio stations as well as touring with Damien Jurado through Europe isn’t bad at all for a local folk singer songwriter. Give her a listen and it’s not hard to understand why people are taking notice.
- September 15 – Gardens & Villa at Crescent Ballroom
Having just released their 3rd album, I’m excited to experience some of the momentum this band seems to be holding onto tightly. Their newest album is much more energetic than the previous two, while keeping all of the creativity and quirks of their earlier work. Having seem them live before, I can confidently suggest that you make a strong effort to catch this show.
- September 21 – Destroyer & Laetitia Satier at Crescent Ballroom
Sometimes the universe hears you griping about how two amazing shows are happening on the same night and you don’t know which one to choose, and through some magical force, are joined together for your enjoyment, saving you the guilt and disappointment of choosing one over the other. Stereolab, as well as any of Sadier’s other projects, have been a favorite of mine for well over a decade, and Destroyer continues to grab my attention album after album.
JEFF’S PICKS
- September 18 – Thundercat at Valley Bar
Thundercat has been making consistently awesome and fresh tunes – saw him last year at FYF and at Marquee and can’t wait to enjoy the set in a more intimate environment.
- September 22 – Mimicking Birds at Valley Bar
Saw Mimicking Birds years ago opening for Modest Mouse and I’ve never missed an opportunity to see them since! Nate Lacy is an incredibly beautiful, intricate songwriter and the full band puts on an amazing show. Highly recommended!
- September 28 – Foreign Language at Crescent Ballroom with A Weekend At The Feelies
Foreign Language is one of my favorite local bands – their music is super unique and they’ve been playing more often this summer, tightening up their live set. Excited to see my old friend Jordan Campbell (A Weekend At The Feelies) perform too! Haven’t seen him perform his solo material since he moved to Seattle and started this new project.
- September 29 – Rudy de Anda at Valley Bar
Rudy de Anda was the frontman for Wild Pack of Canaries – an awesome tropical psych rock band from Long Beach. This is his first tour supporting his awesome new album Ostranie just released on Porch Party Records!
