LINDSAY’S PICKS

August 20th – Shabazz Palaces – Crescent Ballroom
Hip Hop duo Shabazz Palaces is not your typical Hip Hop duo. They are far out, so much so that they just released 2 concept albums about out outer space and its inhabitants. Looking forward to hearing/seeing this live for the first time.
August 20th – Niki J Crawford – Chandler Center For The Arts
I’ve yet to hear Niki’s solo work, but I have seen Orgone perform a handful of times and their frontwoman Niki J Crawford is downright incredible. Here’s an opportunity to hear with a new band, and it’s FREE!
August 27th – Sylvan Esso – Van Buren
Lots of hype surrounding this show!! Not only for Sylvan Esso but for the valley’s new venue we’re all excited to brag about! I’m going for the opener, Flock Of Dimes, the side project of Wye Oak woman, Jenn Wasner, one of my favorite albums of last year!

DARIO’S PICKS

August 9th – The Downtown Chamber Series – Phoenix Art Museum
This series has been going strong for over 17 years. If you’re looking for some of the best musicians in town, player some of the most timeless pieces of music in the most interesting venues, look no further than the Downtown Chamber Series.

August 20th – Shabazz Palaces – Crescent Ballroom

Shabazz Palaces is the current project of Ishmael Butler, formerly known as Butterfly from the 90s jazz hip hop group, Digable Planets. Shabazz Palaces is quiet possibly one of the most unique hip hop groups touring and recording, today. The music is dark and ambient, often obscuring the ever present “beat” that you normally find in hip hop. Butler’s vocal style has a maturity that would be expected from someone who was an early pioneer of the golden age of hip hop and has kept progressing, instead of holding on to past efforts.

August 18th – Laetitia Sadier – Valley Bar

Laetitia Sadier is best known as the vocalist for Stereolab. However, after seeing Stereolab, Monade and her solo project, it is clear that she has so much more influence over the sound of any band she is in. There is a clear consistency between projects that includes all the best parts of each group. She’s on a short list of acts that I will do all in my power to see, anytime they come through town.

BRITTANY’S PICKS

August 11th – Badabing -Yucca Tap Room
San Diego duo, Badabing, return to Phoenix playing a free show at Yucca Tap Room! Also on the bill, two of my favorite local bands, JJCnV and Man Hands!
