THIS WEEK’S NEW RELEASES

Sparks – A Steady Drip, Drip, Drip CD/2xLP (BMG)
Brothers Ron and Russell Mael aka art-pop outfit Sparks return with their 24th studio album, A Steady Drip, Drip, Drip. Since storming into the charts, minds and airwaves in 1974 with “This Town Ain’t Big Enough For Both Of Us” from their third album Kimono My House, the musically vital pop pioneers have created a unique legacy both on record and in their live performances. A Steady Drip, Drip, Drip follows Sparks’ 2017 album Hippopotamus, an extraordinary record which saw them return to the Top 10 and was universally acclaimed with many critics declaring it to be one of the finest albums of the year and the pinnacle of the band’s career – until now. Includes the bombastic, tongue-in-cheek new single “Self-Effacing.” [Limited colored vinyl pressing also available.]

Willie Nelson – First Rose Of Spring CD/LP+MP3 (Legacy)
While his last few albums have focused on facing the reality of mortality and crying or laughing in its face, First Rose Of Spring, an atmospheric soulful showcase of beautifully-written songs and poignant performances, is focused much more on celebrating the now and embracing life, love and friends and family. Premiering 11 new Willie Nelson studio performances and featuring original artwork created by Willie’s son Micah, the album finds Willie working again with longtime friend and producer Buddy Cannon and debuts two new songs co-written by the pair: “Blue Star” and “Love Just Laughed”. Alongside his new compositions on the album, Willie pays musical tribute to a variety of pop and country songwriters and performers, interpreting songs penned by Toby Keith (“Don’t Let The Old Man In”), Billy Joe Shaver (“We Are The Cowboys”) and Pete Graves (“Just Bummin’ Around” – a song recorded by Jimmy Dean, Dean Martin and others).

Pure X – Self Titled (Fire Talk) CD/LP
Recorded live in single takes in the Texas hill country by Danny Reisch (Shearwater), this is their clearest, most focused work to date. The rhythm section is locked in–a night train through the desert. There is more singing, the weary wisdom of the lyrics ringing like Tibetan bowls. In 38 minutes, Pure X weave a culmination, all the delays and distortion, the grinding mortar of touring, the low-tide pulling them out from a cult band, to a legacy band, it’s here, understood and forgiven.

Jockstrap – Wicked City (Warp) LP
London based alternative pop project Jockstrap are sharing their debut Warp EP following their signing and single release, ‘Acid’ from earlier this year. Jockstrap’s instigators Georgia Ellery and Taylor Skye have enjoyed a remarkable 18 months since launching their 2018 debut mini-album Love Is The Key To The City. Skye has developed his own much-lauded solo project and remixed the sublime new album from Arizona’s Injury Reserve (who Jockstrap toured with in the U.K. last year) in its entirety. Ellery has also collaborated with Underworld on their ongoing experimental project, DRIFT.

Sun City Girls – Live At The Sky Church LP (Twenty One Eighty)
The first new Sun City Girls release since Funeral Mariachi (2010), Live at the Sky Church is a performance that melds their signature alien-jazz improv, Asian-tinged psychedelia, and Middle Eastern meditations together with their ranting psychodrama. An audio and visual recording from Seattle in 2004 shows a group that is both aware and committed to it’s history, while still demonstrating the power of the experimental to drive an enormous cudgel through the heart of those who believe to have all the answers.

The Charlatans UK – Between 10th and 11th [Reissue/1992] 2xCD/2xLP (Rough Trade)
This expanded reissue of the Charlatans UK’s sophomore album contains remastered tracks from the often-bootlegged live show from Chicago in 1991, known as Isolation 21.2.91, a holy grail amongst fans.

Dirty Projectors – Windows Open 12”+MP3 (Domino)
Windows Open is the first in a sequence of five EPs that will come out in 2020. Each EP will feature a different band member on lead vocals – Maia, Felicia, Kristin & Dave – with everyone trading verses on the fifth and final installment. The music of Windows Open was written, produced and mixed by Dave, who co-wrote the words with Maia. The first collection of new Projectors material to feature the lineup of the 2018/19 Lamp Lit Prose tour, these four songs are laidback and yearning, poetic and a bit whimsical.

David Dondero – The Transient LP+MP3 (Keeled Scales)
Over 15 years after its initial release, David Dondero’s classic 2003 album The Transient is finally being released on 180gm vinyl. The record also includes a download code for four digital bonus tracks, all early demos.

The Presidents Of The United States Of America ‎– The Presidents Of The United States Of America [Reissue/1995] LP (Pusa Music)
First-time vinyl pressing of the alt rock band’s debut album. The Presidents Of The United States Of America rose to fame in the mid- ‘90s thanks to the radio hits “Lump”, “Kitty” and “Peaches”, which helped propel the group’s 1995 self-titled debut to multi-platinum status.
