MADLIBHigh Jazz Medicine Show #7 LP (Madlib Invazion)
Indie exclusive seaglass blue vinyl. The seventh installment in his Madlib Medicine Show, a jazz album with his Yesterdays New Quintet called High Jazz. Madlib’s been busy this year. And while his recorded output always spans the gamut, he often returns to recurrent themes, spread across the genres that serve as home base – or bases, as it were. Jazz is one such base. With High Jazz, Madlib begins anew – offering familiar jazz sounds from a series of “new” groups from his ever-augmenting cosmos. Call it “Yesterdays Galaxy.” High Jazz, the name itself a tribute to the landmark jazz-fusion album released by Stanton Davis’s Ghetto Mysticism in 1976, shows a marked development in Madlib’s craft. Every element of jazz is there. Is that tune modal-funk? Was that song psych-fusion? Was that a bossa-tinged run or another kind of latin-affair? Where did that sitar come from? Madlib’s Yesterdays-excursions are never easy to categorize and that’s the point – while experiencing chops like these, the desire to rigidly define takes a back seat to aural pleasure.

WILD NOTHING Nocturne LP reissue (Captured Tracks)
10th Anniversary Edition pressed on blue color vinyl. Nocturne, the critically acclaimed sophomore album by Wild Nothing, is a window into singer/songwriter Jack Tatum’s “ideal world” of pop music. Written largely while living in Savannah, GA during 2011, the songs that became Nocturne blur the lines between Tatum’s influences and personality. The album features some open references to past music just as his hit debut Gemini did, but it’s also an album that feels much less rooted in anything in particular and marks a distinct evolution in songwriting for Wild Nothing.

DEVO Somewhere With Devo LP (MVD)

DAN MANGANBeing Somewhere LP (Arts and Crafts)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. All components for Dan Mangan’s sixth studio album, Being Somewhere, were recorded in isolation and sent to producer Drew Brown (Radiohead, Beck). No piece of the puzzle ended up as expected and each moment is the fruition of separate, yet conjoined, rabbit holes. Under the care of Brown’s distinct touch, the album forges sonics beyond the tropes of modern folk music. Through a witty crusade for tenderness, Being Somewhere is a reprieve from a manic world and its effects on the psyche.

LELAND WHITTY Anyhow LP (Innovative Leisure)

His latest album Anyhow features Whitty on guitar, synthesizer, woodwinds, production, composition and strings. Narrative is built into each of Whitty’s tracks in some way. Rather than a specific story, he drew from photographic or cinematic sources. The aim was for the production and arrangement to imply the kind of structural narrative found in jazz improvisation. Whitty’s compositions emerged from voice notes and short loops, for example guitar riffs that he would feed into Ableton and flesh out into larger arrangements.

LAKE STREET DIVE – Fun Machine: The Sequel LP (Concord/Fantasy)
Released in September on CD – now available on vinyl (including an indie store exclusive pink color pressing). Fun Machine: The Sequel is Lake Street Dive’s second set of distinctive cover songs.
