GORILLAZ Cracker Island LP (Parlophone)
Available on black and  indie-exclusive neon purple vinyl. Cracker Island is the eighth studio album from Gorillaz, an energetic, upbeat, genre-expansive collection of 10 tracks featuring yet another stellar line-up of artist collaborators: Thundercat, Tame Impala, Bad Bunny, Stevie Nicks, Adeleye Omotayo, Bootie Brown and Beck. Recorded in London and LA earlier this year, it is produced by Gorillaz, Remi Kabaka Jr. And eight-time Grammy Award-winning producer / multi-instrumentalist / songwriter extraordinaire Greg Kurstin. Title track ‘Cracker Island’ kickstarted the new campaign this Summer hitting the charts across the globe with a top 10 video racking up 10M views in 10 days. The virtual band exploded onto TikTok gaining over 2.1 m followers in the space of a few months where they continue to innovate, taking virtual characters where no character has been before

DEATH VALLEY GIRLS – Islands In The Sky CD/LP (Suicide Sqeeze).
For the better part of a decade, LA’s scrappy rock n’ roll mystics Death Valley Girls have used their music as a means of tapping into a communal cosmic energy. On albums like Glow In The Dark (2016), Darkness Rains (2018), and Under the Spell of Joy (2020) the band challenged the soul-crushing banality of modern society and celebrated “true magical infinite potential” through a collage of scorching proto-punk riffs, earworm melodies, far-out lyrics, and lysergic auxiliary instrumentation. But on their latest album Islands in the Sky, Death Valley Girls’ songwriting mastermind Bonnie Bloomgarden uses the band’s anthemic revelries as a guidebook to spiritual healing and a roadmap for future incarnations of the self. And while these may be the loftiest aims of Death Valley Girls to date, the resulting music is also by far their most infectious and celebratory.

NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL The Collected Works Of Neutral Milk Hotel LP Box Set (Merge)
Neutral Milk Hotel announce The Collected Works of Neutral Milk Hotel, a box set out which includes the first official release of the 2014 rendition of “Little Birds.” In 2011, bandleader Jeff Mangum collected nearly all of the band’s recorded output in a limited-edition box set, which he self-released under Neutral Milk Hotel Records, a small operation helmed by Mangum and his mother. The expanded edition of The Collected Works of Neutral Milk Hotel on Merge, the first & only edition widely available to record stores, includes both of their iconic full-length albums, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea (in gatefold sleeve) & an expanded double LP edition of On Avery Island. Also found in this set, a 12″ picture disc of Jeff Mangum’s famous Live at Jittery Joe’s performance, as well as two 10-inch records (an extended version of the Everything Is EP w/ new art & a collection of acoustic demos from 1992-1995 titled Ferris Wheel on Fire). Then there are the 7″s for the previously mentioned Little Birds, an updated edition of the “Holland, 1945” / “Engine” 7″ & “You’ve Passed / Where You’ll Find Me Now” single. As for the non-music collector goodies, the set also includes two 24″ x 24″ posters & a 2-sided postcard not available anywhere else. The whole set is assembled in a 12″ two-piece telescoping case wrapped box (A slicker, larger box than the original 2011 version). Excluding both full-length albums, everything else included is exclusive to the box set & not available as a standalone item.

SUPERCHUNK – Everything Hurts b/w Making A Break 7” (Merge)
Superchunk recorded 2022’s Wild Loneliness at home over the course of a few months during lockdown. In keeping with the theory that ten songs is the perfect length for a record, they had to take off a couple songs that fit thematically—who doesn’t have days when everything hurts or you feel like making a break for it?—but musically couldn’t find a spot on Wild Loneliness. Perhaps because they are more traditionally “Superchunk”-sounding than the rest of the LP (“Everything Hurts” could be from Come Pick Me Up, and “Making a Break” has What a Time to Be Alive energy)? Who knows! So here are these misfits from the Wild Loneliness sessions, recorded at home in Chapel Hill and mixed by Wally Gagel in LA.

OKONSKI – Magnolia LP (Colemine)
The studio at 122 West Loveland Avenue was not an unfamiliar space for Steve Okonski, the leader of his eponymous trio Okonski. Ever since the Colemine label set up shop in Loveland, Ohio it has been a host to a number of groups passing through town, including Durand Jones and the Indications who all of this trio’s members have connections to. After setting aside some time in winter of 2020, Okonski, trained initially as a classical pianist, invited Michael Isvara “Ish” Montgomery and Aaron Frazer to work on an album that was initially planned to be beat driven and fully composed trio instrumentals.
After finishing this first session with some improvisations, a second week was booked in the summer of 2021 to try and capture some more of that spontaneous energy. During this session, the tracks were all improvised and recorded live to a Tascam 388 during several late nights at the Colemine HQ. They were structured to allow the group’s collective intuition to fully shape the melodies and arcs of the music.

SHAME Food For Worms CD/LP/CASS (Dead Oceans)
SHAME Adderall b/w Slimbo 7” (Dead Oceans)
Food for Worms marks a sonic departure from anything they’ve done before, and – for the first time – the band are not delving inwards, but seeking to capture the world around them. Abandoning their post-punk beginnings for far more eclectic influences, Food for Worms draws from the sharp yet uncomplicated lyrical observations of Lou Reed, as well as the more melodic works of 90s German band Blumfeld. They called upon renowned producer Flood (Nick Cave, U2, PJ Harvey) to execute their vision. “I don’t think you can be in your own head forever,” says Steen. A conversation after one of their gigs with a friend prompted a stray thought that he held onto: “It’s weird, isn’t it? Popular music is about love, heartbreak, or yourself. There isn’t much about your mates.”

U.S. GIRLSBless This Mess CD (4AD)
U.S. Girls operates on a uniquely out-of-time wavelength, alternately wronged and rueful, classic but contemporary, bruised vignettes of poetic Americana through a feminist lens. Bless This Mess marks both a divergence from and deepening of Meg Remy’s songbook, more at peace with her restless truths and moods. Long-time collaborator (as well as vocal engineer, multi-instrumentalist, husband, and co-parent) Maximilian Turnbull plays a key role facilitating these fluid muses. As artists and partners their rapport at this point is thoroughly symbiotic, able to tap into subtle veins of humor and heaviness, rhythm, and reverie.

ALGIERS Shook CD/LP (Matador)
Algiers returns with Shook, their first new music since 2020’s There Is No Year, called “a heady concoction of post-punk, ‘60s soul and political insight.” (NME ****) Shook features contributions from Rage Against The Machine’s Zack De La Rocha, Boy Harsher’s Jae Matthews, Big Rube, billy woods, Backxwash, and many more. September’s standalone release of Shook single “Bite Back” was greeted by The FADER with a glowing “Song You Need” review: “A sober state of the union and a rallying cry for the revolution.”

LUCEROShould’ve Learned By Now CD/LP (Liberty & Lament)
2023 release from the veteran country punk band. Includes the single “One last F.U.” Available on black and limited edition silver vinyl. It would be difficult to find a band that is more self-aware than the longtime touring band Lucero. Since forming in Memphis in the late ‘90s, Lucero’s base musical hallmarks have remained like the band’s initial sound established with their first record The Attic Tapes. In the history of their expansive discography, Lucero has evolved and embraced everything from southern rock to Stax-inspired Memphis soul, whilst simultaneously maintaining their distinctive sonic foundations. Years later, dedicated fans of the group still flock to hear the band’s punchy driving rhythms, punk-rooted guitar licks, and lyrics that evoke the whiskey drenched sentimentality of Americana singer-songwriters. For their twelfth record, Should’ve Learned By Now, Lucero drew on a lot of work from their past. Literally. By adapting songs and guitar parts that had been left over from the group’s previous two albums, Lucero was able to construct one of its most comprehensive works to date.

ISABELLE ANTENA En Cavale LP [Reissue/1986] (Numero)
After Belgian electro-samba wunderkinds Antena split at the end of 1985, singer Isabelle Antena immediately shed her cold wave crown for a sophisticated pop princess tiara. On 1986’s Martin Hayles-produced En Cavale, echoes of Madonna and city pop abound, with a lipstick stain of L80s Euro dance and spilled cosmopolitans-worth of bossa nova stirred in for good measure. This elegant second chapter of a French pop diva has been expanded to include Antena’s shelved Island Records demo, adjacent B-sides and rarities, plus an expansive essay and previously unpublished photographs.

KOLEZANKA Alone With The Sound The Mind Makes LP/CASS (Bar/None)
While koleżanka’s previous album, Place Is, was about life on the road and the people you meet living out of a suitcase, the new album is all about being alone at home. The voices that you hear in your head when you remember what it was like to hang out with friends. The drinks shared and the stories remembered. Alone With The Sound The Mind Makes is the sophomore album from koleżanka, the project of multi-instrumentalist Kristina Moore.

HOLY HIVEHarping 12” (Big Crown)
By popular demand, Big Crown Records is proud to present Holy Hive’s Harping EP on vinyl for the first time. For their debut EP on Big Crown Records, they decided to start things off with an extended reunion enlisting all of their favorite players from the Big Crown Family and beyond. The backbone for all these songs is the accomplished Harpist Mary Lattimore, who gives her learned heartfelt accompaniment to every song. There are guest vocals from one of their favorite songwriters Sasami on two tracks and a cast of lively characters assemble to add their lines – Dave Guy on Trumpet, Nick Movshon on bass, Katie Jacoby and Kristine Kruta on Strings, Leon Michels on Vibes, and finally Jens Jungkurth, Chris Connors, and Alex Deturk as sound sculptors.

OWEN PALLETTHe Poos Clouds LP reissue (Domino)
OWEN PALLETTHas A Good Home LP reissue (Domino)
OWEN PALLETT The Two EPS LP reissue (Domino)
Domino is pleased to announce a remastered reissue of Owen Pallett’s early catalog, including albums Has A Good Home (2005) and He Poos Clouds (2006), and the two EPs Spectrum, 14th Century and Plays to Please (both 2008) combined into one 12” full length release. Pallett has built a reputation on live virtuosity, as violinist for the many local Toronto bands, followed by the wild looped-violin songwriting solo project. Has a Good Home serves as an introduction (and features many of Pallett’s best-known songs), and the follow-up He Poos Clouds is a string quartet album based on the Dungeons & Dragons School of Magic, and was awarded the inaugural Polaris Music Prize.

NAUGHTY BY NATURE 19NAUGHTYIII LP [Reissue/1991] (Tommy Boy)
Despite an excellent debut album, Naughty By Nature was pegged as a one-hit wonder by some, after all, they’d never duplicate the inescapably catchy “O.P.P.”. But when 19 Naughty III was released on February 23, 1993 with the lead single “Hip Hop Hooray, ” the group proved that they could recreate that magic. Celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year, the album has been certified platinum and “Hip Hop Hooray” has become a hip hop anthem. The single was #1 on the charts, earning the band their second Top 10 hit, with the video directed by Spike Lee, featuring appearances from Tupac Shakur, Run-DMC and more. The album also contains the hits “Written on Ya Kitten” and “It’s On” and has guest appearances from Heavy D and Queen Latifah. Production was handled entirely by group member KayGee, who has one foot in the clubs and the other one on the street corner, and that’s true of the group as a whole.

IRIS DEMENTWorking On A World CD (Flariella Records)
On her transcendent new record, Workin’ On A World, Iris DeMent faces the modern world — as it is right now — with its climate catastrophe, pandemic illness, and epidemic of violence and social injustice — and not only asks us how we can keep working towards a better world, but implores us to love each other, despite our very different ways of seeing.

SAM GENDEL CookUp LP (Nonesuch)
Sam Gendel’s Cookup is a 2023 album comprising interpretations of R&B and soul hits originally released between 1992 and 2004. As with his 2020 Nonesuch debut, Satin Doll, Gendel recorded Cookup in his native California with his friends and collaborators Gabe Noel and Philippe Melanson; the trio again adopts an approach of simultaneous synchronized sonic construction/deconstruction of the album’s source material, which this time includes songs by Ginuwine, 112, Aaliyah, All-4-One, Soul 4 Real, Beyoncé, Joe, Erykah Badu, Mario, SWV, and Boyz II Men.

CHRISTIAN MCBRIDE’S NEW JAWNPrime LP (Brother Mister Productions)
Christian McBride’s New Jawn – trumpeter Josh Evans (Jackie McLean, Cedar Walton, Rasheid Ali), saxophonist and bass clarinetist Marcus Strickland (Roy Haynes, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Chris Dave, Bilal, Robert Glasper), and drummer Nasheet Waits (Jason Moran, Joe Lovano, John Medeski) – is back with their highly anticipated sophomore album, Prime, the follow-up from McBride’s Grammy nominated Philly-centric named group. Featuring original compositions from each band member as well as fresh takes on songs from Sonny Rollins, Ornette Coleman and Larry Young, this group offers an exhilarating space of exploration for McBride to stretch his veteran wings.

DANIEL BACHMAN – Almanac Behind LP (Three Lobed)
Almanac Behind is both an anagram of Daniel Bachman’s name and a reference to the fact that rapid climate changes on earth have rendered traditional weather forecasting methods woefully unable to accurately predict our future. Over fifteen tracks, Almanac Behind guides the listener through natural disaster and its aftermath, via a series of field recordings by Bachman and his collaborators. The guitar, banjo, fiddle, and other instruments are presented in neutral modal tunings, avoiding conventional harmonic representations of mood and sentiment, and are often digitally altered in both subtle and obvious ways. At its core, Almanac Behind is powered by the sounds of the Earth, tones inherently familiar to the billions of people who have experienced extreme weather. It is an attempt to emotionally contend with and foster connection over a shared global experience. Captivating and original, Bachman continues to push boundaries for folk and guitar music much as he did on the critically acclaimed Axacan.

MOTORHEAD Bad Magic: Seriously Bad Magic LP [Reissue/2015] (Silver Lining)
MOTÖRHEAD the iconic Godfathers of heavy metal, released their 23rd (and final) studio album Bad Magic in 2015. Instantly hailed as one of the best the beloved trio had recorded in many years, Bad Magic: SERIOUSLY Bad Magic enjoys a bonus-packed refresh, adding two previously unreleased tracks from those furious sessions: “Bullet in Your Brain” and “Greedy Bastards” as well as a snarling, fangs-out live performance from that subsequent tour at the giant Fuji Rock Festival in Japan in 2015. Fans will also get “War, Love, Death and Injustice”, an audio interview with Lemmy conducted by Motörhead expert Robert Kiewik during the tour, and should the desire to have a chat with Lem or anyone beyond this mortal coil arise, the box-set will exclusively contain a MURDER ONE ouija board (complete with the Ace of Spades planchette to spell out the conversation). As the title says, that is some SERIOUS BAD MAGIC!

GINA BIRCH I Play My Bass Loud CD/LP (Third Man)
2023 release, the debut solo album from the founding member of iconic British band The Raincoats. Gina is a respected painter, a celebrated filmmaker and video director. In September of 2021, Gina released her first ever solo single, Feminist Song, on Third Man Records in celebration of the opening of their brand new London location. I Play My Bass Loud was recorded by Martin Youth Glover from Killing Joke and features Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth.

CRIME & THE CITY SOLUTION – Paradise Discotheque LP [Reissue/1990] (Mute)
CRIME & THE CITY SOLUTIONThe Bride Ship  LP [Reissue/1989] (Mute)
CRIME & THE CITY SOLUTION – Shine  LP [Reissue/1988] (Mute)
Limited colored vinyl reissues. A band out of time, Crime & the City Solution were perennial outsiders who could not rest in their native Australia, and instead found inspiration in the colder climes of London and Berlin. Their mesmeric, expressive music evolved through many incarnations and a great deal of adversity. The first incarnation of the band appeared in 1977/78, in the midst of Australia’s nascent punk scene and re- grouped in London in 1984.

KATE FAGANI Don’t Wanna Be Too Cool LP (Captured Tracks)
“In the ’70s, Kate Fagan reveled in the energy of punk and new wave on dance floors in London and New York before drifting to Chicago, where she picked up a bass guitar and invented her own plucky minimalist sound. Her 1980 song “I Don’t Wanna Be Too Cool” became a best-seller at the legendary Wax Trax! Records. This new expanded version of Captured Tracks’ 2016 reissue features four unheard, ahead-of-their-time tunes slathered in precious melodies and rhythms that lean into early house music territory.” – Jen B. Larson, author of Hit Girls: Women of Punk in the USA, 1975-1983

BRIASings Cuntry Covers Vol. 2 CD/LP (Sub Pop)
As its name suggested, the intimate and sultry Cuntry Covers Vol. 1 was always going to have a follow-up. Led by the brooding vocals of Bria Salmena, Cuntry Covers Vol. 2 is every bit as potent as its predecessor whose noir-inflected alternative country-rock stood in sharp contrast to the singer’s commanding delivery as leader of post-punk revivalists FRIGS. Debuting the project in 2021, the languid, reverb-drenched Cuntry Covers Vol. 1 saw her artfully collaborating with multi-instrumentalist Duncan Hay Jennings and reimagining a carefully picked collection of Americana anthems. Vol. 2 pushes the envelope further and harder. Encompassing feverish takes on tracks by Gillian Welch, Paula Cole, Mary Margaret O’Hara, Robert Lester Folsom, Glen Campbell – by way of Nick Cave – and the late, great Loretta Lynn, Bria’s deliciously dark approach shimmers through these six startling songs.

OPEN MIKE EAGLE Component System With The Auto Reverse LP (Otherground Inc)
Released last year on CD, now available on vinyl! Long before the digital music era facilitated the easy, instant skipping of songs and albums, auto-reverse seemed like music technology at its most magical. The mechanism allowed the listener to seamlessly switch from one side of a cassette to the other without expending the effort to physically eject and turn the tape over. On Open Mike Eagle’s eighth solo album a tape called component system with the auto reverse that feature has been honored as a key part of the title. Fittingly, the album is written in the present, but anchored in the past, as if the MC is flitting between two worlds without ever breaking the musical spell.

NESSA BARRETTYoung Forever LP (Warner)
Fueled by a haunting pop soundscape, Nessa Barrett’s debut album Young Forever showcases dramatic vocals and emotional anthems. Never one to shy away from the tough issues, Nessa has only become more dedicated to using her platform as a source of healing. That’s evident with every passing track, including “madhouse” and “die first” and it’s something she’s clearly intent on continuing to explore on Young Forever, as she continues to craft her lasting legacy.

MUDDY WATERSBest Of 1948-1956 LP (Acrobat)
Muddy Waters was one of the most important figures in post-war blues, influencing some of the most significant rock musicians of his era. He was one of the most prominent, in a relatively small coterie of performers, who effectively invented and defined the approach to amplified guitar-based blues, in the hotbed of the genre, Chicago, and much of what has happened since then reflects Muddy’s rich legacy. This 14-track collection, featuring such instantly recognisable numbers as I’m Your Hoochie Coochie Man, Got My Mojo Working and I’m Ready, offers an entertaining overview of his recordings aimed at the commercial market, especially in the context of an R&B scene which was changing rapidly during a decade and a half of musical evolution and revolution. A delightful celebration of his unique style which became the template for every electric blues performer.

MARS VOLTA – Frances The Mute LP [Reissue/2005] (Clouds Hill)
MARS VOLTA – De-Loused in the Comatorium LP [Reissue/2003] (Clouds Hill)
Black LP reissues.

THE CULT Love LP (reissue) (Beggars Banquet)
Remastered and available on black and limited edition red vinyl. Love was the Cult’s second album, originally released in 1985. It was their breakthrough and produced many singles including “Rain”, “Revolution” and the epic anthem “She Sells Sanctuary” – songs that still resonate today – in fact “She Sells Sanctuary” was recently featured in Season Two of the hit TV show Euphoria. The album eventually defined their career, but at the time, it flew in the face of everything that was going on in music.

GRUFF RHYS The Almond and the Seahorse Soundtrack LP (Rough Trade)
This soundtrack is an encapsulation of what makes both the Welsh music icon and this film captivating and timeless. The Super Furry Animals frontman has created a double album that reflects the charm, melancholy and poignancy of the Rebel Wilson and Charlotte Gainsbourg-starring feature; showcasing the easy warmth and beauty Rhys finds with a piano and guitar, weaved between moving instrumental interludes and a handful of cosmic pop songs for good measure. Perhaps most reminiscent of the opus created by Badly Drawn Boy for the movie About A Boy, the record spans the breadth of Rhys’ songwriting talents. Directed by BAFTA winner Celyn Jones (Six Minutes to Midnight) and BAFTA nominee Tom Stern, The Almond and the Seahorse is a funny, poignant, and moving story that follows the entwined experiences of two couples where one partner has survived traumatic brain injury and how it impacts their lives together. It is the second soundtrack Gruff Rhys has produced following his work on Set Fire To The Stars, the acclaimed semi-biographical drama based on the life of poet Dylan Thomas. To celebrate the film’s release, a limited edition vinyl version of the OST will be pressed on transparent yellow vinyl and include a film poster, obi strip and foil numbered stamp.

RON SEXSMITH Vivian Line CD/LP (Cooking Vinyl)
The 17th album from the Canadian singer/songwriter. The Vivian Line features 12 songs written and performed by Ron. The Vivian Line is a rural route right near where we live in Stratford (Ontario). Whenever we have to get out of the city we jump on The Vivian Line and it dumps us out onto the highway. I wondered about the name when we first moved there and thought it was intriguing… it sort of represents escaping from our old life in Toronto to this new phase we’re in. And it’s also like a portal to my old life when I have to get back there. I recorded it (The Vivian Line) with Brad Jones in Nashville. (Brad played bass on three of my earlier records Other Songs, Whereabouts and Blue Boy), and it’s a very lush-sounding, almost baroque pop record. (A distant cousin of Whereabouts.) The songs were mostly inspired by this stage in life that I find myself in and trying to figure it all out.

STROKES The Singles Vol 1.  7” box (Sony)
The Strokes The Singles – Volume 01 is a 7” vinyl boxset comprised of the 10 original vinyl singles released from the band’s first three studio albums. Utilizing the original singles artwork, the boxset will include standard black 7” vinyl of “The Modern Age,” “Hard To Explain,” “Last Nite,” and “Someday,” off of Is This It (2001), “12:51,” “Reptilia,” and “The End Has No End” off of Room on Fire (2003), and “Juicebox,” “Heart In A Cage,” and “You Only Live Once” off of First Impressions of Earth (2006) with their accompanying b-sides.

SAINT ETIENNE Good Humor [Reissue/1998] LP (Heavenly)
Limited color vinyl LP pressing. 25th Anniversary edition. Good Humor is the fourth studio album by Saint Etienne, originally released in 1998. The album was a departure for the group, who had been associated with the indie dance genre. Tiger Bay, their previous album, had added many acoustic and orchestral elements but still belonged to the synthpop and dance genres, while Good Humor is more acoustic, having more in common musically with their 1993 hit single “You’re In A Bad Way”.
