Orville Peck – Stampede CD/2xLP/Cassette (WB)
Critically acclaimed, Orville Peck has long dreamed of making Stampede, a duets album with singers, songwriters, and fellow musicians he has long admired. And now, music icons, rebels and newcomers join with Orville on his third full-length body of work to help create a two-part record that tips its hat to music’s past, present, and future. Orville just released the first part to this project Stampede: Vol.1 (last May) with duets such as Willie Nelson, Midland, Elton John, Allison Russell, Noah Cyrus, Bu Cuaron and Nathaniel Rateliff. X has been great for 47 years, building their legend as one of America’s most original punk bands with seven albums between 1980 and 1993. WHY? – The Well I Fell Into LP (Joyful Services)
Color vinyl pressing. For nearly three decades, Why? have thrived in subverting expectations. Across seven unpredictable and adventurous studio albums, the band led by Cincinnati songwriter Yoni Wolf has stretched the fringes of psychedelic pop, hip-hop, and electronic music. No matter the genre experiments and thematic departures, their discography is remarkably consistent, anchored by Wolf’s disarming lyrical transparency. His writing is provocative, self-lacerating, and always considered, coming from a place of blunt emotional openness. The Well I Fell Into, the eighth full-length from Why?, is Wolf at his most cohesive and poignant.

Captain Beefheart – Now Playing LP (Rhino/WEA)
Red colorway. Born Don Vliet, Captain Beefheart was one of modern music’s true innovators. The owner of a remarkable four-and-a-half-octave vocal range, he employed idiosyncratic rhythms, absurdist lyrics, and an unholy alliance of free jazz, Delta blues, latter-day classical music, and rock and roll to create a singular body of work virtually unrivaled in its daring and fluid creativity. While he never came even remotely close to mainstream success, Beefheart’s impact was incalculable, and his fingerprints were all over punk, new wave, and post-rock.

Bobby Hutcherson – Medina [Reissue/1980] LP (Blue Note)
The late-1960s and early-1970s were a wildly creative period for Bobby Hutcherson with the vibraphonist freely exploring a wide range of stylistic possibilities from post-bop and the avant-garde to fusion and Latin Jazz. The cutting-edge 1969 session Medina – which wouldn’t be first released until 1980 as part of the LT Series-documented one of Hutcherson’s most remarkable band line-ups featuring two of his frequent collaborators – Harold Land on tenor saxophone and flute and Joe Chambers on drums-along with Stanley Cowell on piano and Reggie Johnson on bass.

To experience Justin R. Cruz Gallego’s pulverizing Sub Pop debut is to get burned down to ashes and burst forth, born anew. Grim Iconic… (Sadistic Mantra), the Tacoma-based artist’s second album, is driven by opposing forces: noisy abstractions and tightly structured beats, anguish and dissolution at the outside world and empowerment within, apathy and catharsis. Diana Krall – The Look Of Love [Reissue/2001] LP (Verve)
The Look Of Love is a lush, cinematic collection of ballads and bossa nova tunes, produced by Tommy LiPuma, arranged and conducted by the legendary Claus Ogerman, and featuring the London Symphony Orchestra. Originally released in 2001, The Look Of Love brings to mind such classic Frank Sinatra albums as In the Wee Small Hours and Only The Lonely – but the elegant piano solos, sensual vocals and wickedly modern sense of humor are, inimitably, all Diana Krall.

Los Lonely Boys – Resurrection CD/LP (BMG)
The Grammy award-winning, multi platinum San Angelo, Texas trio Los Lonely Boys have welcomed audiences into their family with open arms since emerging in 1996. After 23 years of relentless recording and touring, Los Lonely Boys mutually agreed to take a rest in 2019 until a different kind of divinity stepped in to interrupt the band’s slumber. The Who invited Los Lonely Boys to open a string of shows in 2022. They agreed because, well, who can say “no” to The Who? Music materialized naturally, and this reinvigorated spirit surged through what would become their first album in eleven years, the aptly titled Resurrection. As always, their brotherly bond anchors the music.

Red vinyl. One of the best West Coast folk-rock/psychedelic bands, Love were the kings of the Los Angeles psychedelic rock scene during the late ‘60s period.

 

 

 

Lee Morgan – Taru [Reissue/1980] LP (Blue Note)
Lee Morgan’s 1968 album Taru found the trumpeter at a crossroads exploring a variety of styles from modal jazz and post-bop to beautiful balladry and funky boogaloos. The band here is notable for the elevating presence of guitarist George Benson and the addition of tenor saxophonist Bennie Maupin.

Meshell Ndegeocello – No More Water: The Gospel Of James Baldwin CD/LP (Blue Note)
Meshell Ndegeocello follows her Grammy-winning Blue Note debut, The Omnichord Real Book, with No More Water: The Gospel Of James Baldwin. This visionary album pays homage to the eminent writer and activist James Baldwin and will be released on his centennial, August 2, 2024. Meshell’s transformative music and collaborative spirit ignite this genre-bending work, which is at once a musical experience, a church service, a celebration, a testimonial, and a call to action, creating a shared space for reflection, conversation, and social change. Co-produced by Meshell and guitarist Chris Bruce, No More Water also features frequent collaborators Justin Hicks, Kenita Miller, Abe Rounds, Jake Sherman, Jebin Bruni, and Julius Rodriguez, as well as powerful spoken word performances by Jamaican poet and activist Staceyann Chin. Sam Smith – In The Lonely Hour (10th Anniversary Edition) 2xCD/LP (Capitol)
Grammy, Brit, Golden Globe and Academy Award winning artist Sam Smith marks a decade of their multi-platinum debut In The Lonely Hour. Released in 2014, In The Lonely Hour was the first of many incredible milestones and successes that Sam would achieve over the course of their standout career. The Grammy award winning, now 6 x RIAA Platinum Certified album became the biggest selling debut album of the decade, leading to Sam being awarded a Guinness World Record for holding the greatest number of consecutive weeks in the UK Top 10 Album Chart in the 2010s. The 10-track project includes UK Number 1’s “Money On My Mind” and “Stay With Me”. Other hits on the album are “I’m Not The Only One”, “Like I Can” and “Lay Me Down”.

The Stooges – Now Playing LP (Elektra/WEA)
Orange vinyl. During the psychedelic haze of the late ’60s, the grimy, noisy, and relentlessly bleak rock & roll of the Stooges was conspicuously out of time. Like the Velvet Underground, the Stooges revealed the underside of sex, drugs, and rock & roll, showing all the grime beneath the myth. The Stooges, however, weren’t nearly as cerebral as the Velvets. Taking their cue from the over-amplified pounding of British blues, the primal raunch of American garage rock, and the psychedelic rock (as well as the audience-baiting) of the Doors, the Stooges were raw, immediate, and vulgar.

All hail Swami John Reis, the force behind Hot Snakes, Rocket From The Crypt, Drive Like Jehu, and many others. His latest venture is the formation of Swami and the Bed of Nails.

Ween – Chocolate And Cheese [Reissue/1994] 3xLP (Elektra/WEA)
Limited triple vinyl LP pressing. A brilliant fusion of gonzo pop, 1994’s Chocolate And Cheese is arguably Ween’s finest moment. The album proved once and for all that along with their twisted sense of humor and wide musical vocabulary, Dean and Gene Ween are impressive songwriters. Over the course of Chocolate And Cheese, Ween explore virtually every permutation of pop, rock, soul, and funk in their own unique (and very “brown”) way. This 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition finds the original album recut from the original master tapes by Bernie Grundman, alongside fifteen previously unreleased demos of classic and soon-to-be classic tracks from their personal archives.

Drop Nineteens – Delaware [Reissue/1992] LP (Wharf Cat)
Yellow vinyl. Delaware is the debut studio album by American band Drop Nineteens released on June 19, 1992. Despite the album’s release over 30 years ago, and the band remaining inactive from 1993 onwards this album has remained a favorite of shoegaze fans for decades and was listed as one of the 50 best shoegaze albums of all time by Pitchfork in 2016. This lasting love of the record has cemented the band as one of the most influential bands of the genre of their time.
