Available on black and Gold colored vinyl.
Cat Power, the vocalist, songwriter, musician and producer Chan Marshall, returns with her new album Covers, her third album of celebrated reinterpretations of songs by classic and contemporary artists. Produced in its entirety by Marshall, Covers features fully re-imagined songs by Frank Ocean, Bob Seger, Lana Del Rey, Jackson Browne, Iggy Pop, The Pogues, Nick Cave, The Replacements and more, plus an updated rendition of her own song “Hate” from The Greatest (2006), retitled “Unhate” for this album. Covers is the first album from Cat Power since “Wanderer,” her widely-acclaimed 2018 Domino debut, which earned rave reviews and features with the New York Times, The Guardian, The Cut, a NPR Tiny Desk, and a duet with Lana Del Rey on “Woman,” which The New Yorker called a “trembling manifesto.” Marshall’s work as Cat Power has defied genre and convention, her legacy rippling through the work of a wide range of contemporary musical luminaries.

Kurt Vile and Steve Gunn Gunn Vile LP (Three Lobed)
Available on limited edition purple vinyl.
Kurt Vile and Steve Gunn originally connected by mutual friends and geographic proximity, have long pushed the other’s continued artistic development. Despite sharing many live stages over the years, this collaborative album represents the first time that the two have worked together in the studio. Vile’s side sees him recast tracks by John Prine (“Way Back When”) and Randy Newman (“Pretty Boys,” featuring some truly *electric* guitar flourishes from Gunn) as if they were KV originals. The theme of reinvention continues with Vile tearing through a solo banjo rendition of his “Red Apples” (originally from his God Is Saying This To You… LP), retitled here as “Red Apples For Tom Scharpling.” Gunn takes on a late period Nico track, “60/40,” and pulls a lysergic rocker out of the track’s goth-ish roots. The bulk of Gunn’s contribution is the epically winding “Spring Garden,” a track in the vein of some of his other longform guitar excursions. Featuring signature contributions from Vile and Mary Lattimore, this hypnotizing cut is unmistakably a new classic in Gunn’s catalog.

BonoboFragments CD/LP (Ninja Tune)
Available on Black and ltd edition red marbled vinyl.
Fragments is the most emotionally intense record that he – aka Simon Green – has ever had to make. It’s no surprise that it’s also his masterpiece. The album features Jamila Woods, Joji, Kadhja Bonet, Jordan Rakei, O’Flynn and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. Born first out of fragments of ideas and experimentation, the album ultimately was fused together in a burst of creativity fueled by both collaboration and Green’s escape into the wild.

Tkay Maidza Last Year Was Weird, Vol. 3vLP (4AD)
ARIA & BET nominated artist, Tkay Maidza has announced the highly anticipated follow up to 2020’s breakout Last Year Was Weird, Vol. 2, which earned the #1 Best EP of the Year nod from The Needle Drop. The limited-edition LP features new and previously unreleased material, Bandcamp-only singles, and other obscurities alongside standouts from her 2017 tape Collected Pieces. Beyond the vinyl compendium, an expanded tracklist on the cassette/digital version brings more of Lattimore’s archives together for the first time.

LumineersBrightside CD/LP/CASS (Dualtone)
Available on black and ltd colored vinyl.
Multi-platinum selling GRAMMY-nominated band The Lumineers are back with their fourth record,  BRIGHTSIDE. Coming off the success of their darkly cinematic third record III, Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites’ latest work is their most spontaneous and joyous yet, featuring their ever-more-sophisticated songwriting and arranging and production from longtime producer and friend Simone Felice. The lead single and title track “BRIGHTSIDE, ” recorded in just one day, sets off the album with an anthemic bang, touching on themes of love and American life and featuring the foot-stomping, arena-filling sound the band has become beloved for worldwide. “… this time it was bare bones, ” Schultz expressed. “We started demoing in Jer’s basement and didn’t even touch the computer – we just used my phone to record voice memos on, and that was what we sent to Simone. For me, it was about wanting to have more curiosity in the studio and not have everything all dialed in. It felt like a new path.”

Underoath Voyeurist LP (Fearless)
Underoath return to their unique chaotic core with their ninth studio album, Voyeurist. An unguarded keyhole invites the viewer to peer into the process and draw their own conclusion on who the band is, and what that perception reveals about the viewer themselves. Amidst the colliding perspectives, it’s clear that identities have been lost, and you are no longer you.

AnamanaguchiSummer Singles 2010/2020 LP (Polyvinyl)
2xLP set that unites two fan-favorite collections of singles in a first-ever physical edition and confirms the band’s reputation among those in-the-know as one of the most casually trailblazing and unexpectedly refined bands around. Each eight-song set was originally recorded and released in the wake of one of Anamanaguchi’s most beloved albums. In 2010, they created the cult-classic soundtrack for Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game, which was just reissued this January, and cemented their role as pioneers in the homemade, video game world of chiptune music.

Chicano Batman Freedom Is Free LP (colored) ATO
Limited pink and blue splatter vinyl LP pressing. Chicano Batman made their boldest statement yet with Freedom Is Free, their third album and ATO Records debut. To achieve their ambitious sonic goals, the quartet worked with producer Leon Michels (Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, The Black Keys and The Menahan Street Band) in his Diamond Mine Recording studio in Long Island City, NY. In addition to tracking the album to analog tape, Michels contributed keyboards and his trademark horn arrangements.

Elvis Costello and the ImpostersThe Boy Named If CD/LP (Capitol)
Elvis Costello & The Imposters release The Boy Named If, an album of urgent, immediate songs with bright melodies, stinging guitar solos, and a quick step to the rhythm. Costello says, “The full title of this record is The Boy Named If (And Other Children’s Stories). ‘IF’ is a nickname for your imaginary friend; your secret self, the one who knows everything you deny, the one you blame for the shattered crockery and the hearts you break, even your own.” Produced by Costello and Sebatian Krys

Richard Hell and the Voidoids Blank Generation LP (Warner)
Limited colored LP reissue.

High On FireLuminiferous LP (Mnrk)
180G Opaque Olive Green in Gatefold. High on Fire creates molten heavy metal that merges primal fury and aggression, blackened bombast and hall of fame heaviness. They create a supersonic exercise in conquest by volume, delivering calculated catharsis as a volcano of revolving riffs and hailstorm of thundering drums combine to beam a blazing spotlight towards the future of modern metal music. After nearly two decades of trailblazing new passageways to heaviness, High on Fire’s strong, stunning archetype continues to both sharpen and evolve and the trio’s vision has never been clearer. The riff, as always, is King.

Lany – GG BB XX LP (Interscope)
Lany’s 4th album, gg bb xx, changes gears for Paul Klein, Jake Goss & Les Priest. It focuses on what Klein describes as micro-moments: flashes we experience that come n’ go in the blink of an eye. Nowhere is that spontaneity more evident than in the album’s title (you pronounce it ‘gg’ as in Hadid, ‘bb’ as in Rexha, and ‘xx’ as in, well, The xx). “I wanted a title that had no pretense, no preconceived notion,” Paul explains. “Whatever the song feels like to you, that’s what the title means.”

Jeff Tweedy – Chelsea Walls Soundtrack CD/LP (Omnivore)
Chelsea Walls is a pivotal piece in the creative development of Tweedy and Wilco as they emerged into one of the most important bands of our time. Critically, it revisits the creative burst that would lead to one of the first true masterpieces of the 21st Century in Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.

Wombats Fix Yourself, Not The World CD/LP (Awal)
15 years into their career, one of Britain’s most adored live bands The Wombats return with Fix Yourself, Not The World. The album takes listeners on a rollercoaster journey of emotions. With the lead singer Murph’s incredible lyrics and the band’s ever-changing, though yet familiar musical sound in the front, the album is about realizing that the world won’t change until you look at yourself and change for the better first. Recording remotely over the past year from their respective homes, the band has worked with acclaimed producers Mark Crew (Rag’N’Bone Man, Bastille) and Jacknife Lee (U2, Kasabian, Catfish & The Bottlemen) to produce some of the most captivating and engaging music of their career.

Originally released in September of 1996, Horse Stories is a collection of songs about traveling, gambling, winning, losing, pain, drugs, hope and love. This is the soundtrack to the movie that is life.

Punch BrothersHell On Church Street CD/LP (Nonesuch)
Hell on Church Street, Punch Brothers’ newest album, due January 14, 2022 on Nonesuch Records, is the band’s reimagining of, and homage to, the late bluegrass great Tony Rice’s landmark solo album Church Street Blues. The record features a collection of songs by Bob Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot, Bill Monroe, and others. Recorded at Nashville’s Blackbird Studio in November 2020, during a time of great uncertainty, Hell on Church Street was intended as both its own work of art and a gift to Rice, who died that Christmas. Punch Brothers said of Tony Rice and Church Street Blues: “No record (or musician) has had a greater impact on us, and we felt compelled to cover it in its entirety, with the objective of interacting with it in the same spirit of respect-fueled adventure that Tony brought to each of its pre-existing songs.”

Portrayal Of Guilt Christfucker LP (Run For Cover)
We each have our own idea of what it means to live through a period filled with perpetual dread, a slowly burning world, and overwhelming darkness. In the case of Portrayal of Guilt, their tortuous afterlife comes with grief, loss, masochism, suffering, and pain. On CHRISTFUCKER, their second full-length of 2021, Portrayal of Guilt plunges headfirst into unfathomable depths, creating a work of art that’s powerfully unsettling. “We think of it partially in the sense of scoring a horror movie,” guitarist/vocalist Matt King says. “We wanted to create an atmosphere of anxiety and fear.” The entirety of the album is set to unrelenting, nihilistic, howling soundscapes, created by King, drummer James Beveridge, and bassist, Alex Stanfield.

The Kernal Listen To The Blood LP (Single Lock)
From the joyous, southern-fried grooves of “U Do U” and “Pistol in the Pillow” through the revved-up rockabilly stomp of “Green Green Sky” and the cinematic travelogue of “Wrong Turn to Tupelo” to “The Fight Song,” a sparkling ’80s style duet with Caitlin Rose, it’s a nine-song sequence that showcases The Kernal’s warm, confidential voice while managing to make profound connections with the head, heart and feet. “When people ask me what kind of music I play, I say, ‘It’s like sixteen-foot trailer country music,'” he says. “You pull up a hay trailer in a field and you barbecue a bunch of stuff and there are people setting off fireworks and there are kids running around in diapers with ice cream running down their bellies. You get up there, turn it up and have a good time. I just love seeing people have a good time, and I think that’s why I like country music.

Bill FayStill Some Light: Part 1 LP (Dead Oceans)
Bill Fay has always sung about attempting to understand the most universal questions: those of nature, spirituality, humanity. His songs are “calming hymns for another chaotic time”, he says. His influence can be traced through many artist’s work, and so it only seemed right to celebrate this with a collection of newer voices interpreting his timeless tracks. Originally released in 2010 by David Tibet (Current 93), Still Some Light was released as a double CD, made up of 70’s album demos (Disc One) and 2009 home recordings (Disc Two). This year, for the first time, this collection of recordings will be pressed to vinyl and released digitally, presented alongside contemporary reimaginings of the tracks by Kevin Morby, Steve Gunn, Julia Jacklin and Mary Lattimore. Bill Fay’s words and melodies remain unaffected by the passing of time and changing trends; and here alongside the original recordings, these reinvented versions still calmly guide us through another moment of chaos.

Front Bottoms Self TItled LP (Bar/None)
Limited vinyl picture disc LP pressing. It’s the 10 Year Anniversary of The Front Bottoms’ self-titled debut, a beautiful alchemy of anthemic hooks and quotable confessions achievable only by the closest of friends, Brian Sella and Mat Uychich. Their songs are immediately recognizable, lyrics and riffs cleverly and effortlessly spun together into songs surprisingly real. Lyrically Brian Sella fires off scattershot images that the listener can gather up and make sense of like working puzzle pieces on the floor. Romance, freedom, paranoia, partying and somehow getting clean all tumble together from song to song. The album includes fan favorites like “Flashlight,” “Swimming Pool,” and “The Beers,” where Sella recalls beefing up for a Jersey Shore summer of steroids “because you like a man with muscles and I like you.”
