Robin Pecknold brings light to the bleakest of winters with Fleet Foxes’ A Very Lonely Solstice, a 13-track career spanning collection recorded in December 2020, at Brooklyn, NY’s St. Ann & the Holy Trinity Church. Now being released for the first time, A Very Lonely Solstice captures a poignant moment in time. The recording was originally broadcasted as a live-stream event on the winter solstice of 2020, just days after New York declared a state of emergency tightening restrictions again in response to increasing COVID-19 cases. Fans worldwide tuned in while quarantined at home, finding solace and a sense of community in a period of extreme isolation. Much of A Very Lonely Solstice showcases a solo focus on Pecknold who offers up acoustic arrangements of fan-favorite songs spanning Fleet Foxes’ catalog. Also featured: a cover of Nina Simone’s “In The Morning” and a rearrangement of the traditional “Silver Dagger.”

EARTH – Full Upon Her Burning Lips LP (Sargent House)
Super limited gold and black LP reissue of their 2017 album.

MADLIB – Medicine Show 5 History Of The Loop Digga 1990-2000 LP (Madlib Invazion)
2LP blue sky version.  The Madlib Medicine Show series is a combination of Madlib’s new hip-hop productions, remixes, beat tapes, and jazz, as well as mixtapes of funk, soul, Brazilian, psych, jazz and other undefined forms of music from the Beat Konducta’s 4-ton stack of vinyl. This collection of beats showcases the way that Madlib’s early Hip Hop demos were filtered out to his friends and associates and provides an opportunity for a unique view into Madlib’s working process: these beats, often freestyled on whatever machine he had at the ready, were picked up by rappers over a period of many years. Trainspotters will find it interesting that beats later destined for the likes of Wildchild and Percee P were made some years before those albums saw release.

NICK CAVE – Seven Psalms 10″ (Goliath Ent)
Limited 10″ vinyl pressing. Housed in dark petrol blue sleeve with grain embossed finish. Title and crucifix rendered in gold foil. Seven Psalms features seven spoken word pieces by Nick Cave set to music in collaboration with Warren Ellis.

HERCULES AND LOVE AFFAIR – In Amber CD/LP (Skint)
Hercules & Love Affair—a project led by DJ and producer Andy Butler—will return this year with their first new album since 2017’s Omnion. The new album features Butler reuniting with ANOHNI for the first time since “Blind” from Hercules & Love Affair’s self-titled 2008 debut. Featuring grey-scaled timbres, ominous beats and scorched synth and guitar tones to create a world that commands stillness from its audience when absorbing the atmosphere. This is the most musically stark and affecting work of his career. Adopting a far more somber tempo than his usual infectious dance numbers, Butler summons a gothic air which permeates the record and heightens the darkness underpinning much of the work.

VARIOUS – STUDIO ONE WOMEN Vol 2 CD/LP (Soul Jazz)
Soul Jazz Records follows up one its most popular Studio One releases with a brand new selection of rare and classic releases by women in reggae. Featuring legendary artists such as Marcia Griffiths, Rita Marley and Hortense Ellis (with a guest appearance by her brother Alton), alongside a host of rarities from lesser known names such as Nina Soul, Nana Mclean, Denise Darlington, Myrna Hague and also Doreen Schaeffer, a vocalist who was a founding member of The Skatalites. A number of these tracks are almost impossible to find and many have never been issued ever since their initial release. The music on the album is of course 100% killer and features backing from all of the seminal groups at 13 Brentford Road including The Skatalites, Sound Dimension, Soul Brothers and the Brentford All Stars, and ranges from ska, rocksteady, roots, lovers and more from the 60s, 70s and 80s. All produced by Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd at Studio One Records, the number one sound in reggae music.

GUIDED BY VOICES – Tremblers and Goggles By Rank CD/LP (GBV Inc)
GBV’s latest batch of brilliant songs ride on colorful psychedelic flourishes and brash post-punk textures that make this ten-song album a one-of-a-kind head trip.  While there are hooks and earworms aplenty within, this album is a complex and kaleidoscopic journey, representing a new echelon in the Guided By Voices universe. It represents another level of songwriting and performance from the group. It plays out like an intricate and powerful collage, in a very multicolored and multi-faceted fashion; a work grand in scale and undertaking.

MIDLAND – The Last Resort: Greetings From LP (Big Machine)
Midland likes their music straight-up. Hardcore country, the kind you find in forgotten bars in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas – wherever the neon’s buzzing but not quite dead. The Grammy-nominated trio plots a resurgence of their thick harmonies, tart lyrics, and steel guitar with The Last Resort: Greetings From. Unfiltered, they want their country 120-proof. Whether it’s a cheating song, a heartbreak ballad or a shoot-out-the-lights romper, they savor the emotions gusto.

JUDDS – Love Can Build A Bridge: Best Of The Judds CD/LP (Curb)
Vinyl LP pressing. 2022 collection from the award-winning country music mother-daughter duo. Love Can Build A Bridge features ten classic including “(Grandpa) Tell Me ’bout the Good Ol’ Days,” “Mama, He’s Crazy,” “Young Love,” and more!

MINIONS SOUNDTRACK – RISE OF GRU CD/LP (Verve)
The original soundtrack to Minions: The Rise of Gru promises another exciting installment in the Minions franchise. Produced by Jack Antonoff and filled to the brim with a star-studded list of artists, you can expect a very funky listening experience. Featuring St Vincent, Brittany Howard, Caroline Polachek, Thundercat, Phoebe Bridgers, Weyes Blood, RZA and more!!!

MICE PARADE – lapapọ LP (Bubble Core)
Mice Parade returns from a decade of silence to release lapapọ, an album that spans the many styles of their storied career, and features guest singer appearances by Angel Deradoorian (Dirty Projectors) and Arone Dyer (Buke & Gase). The rock is louder; the West-African-inspired highlife breaks are chubbier; the dueling drumkits are more complex, the instrumental passages more serene. What started as a home recording project in the late 90s soon morphed into a formidable and completely unique live band of incredible musicians from around the globe, all live-mixed and effected by legendary UK engineer Brandon Knights

STELLA – Up and Away CD (Sub Pop)
Σtella makes her Sub Pop debut with the mesmerizing Up and Away, an old-school pop paean to the pangs and raptures of love. From the Greek folk-inflected get-go, we’re swept up in Σtella’s world – and it’s quite the captivating place to be. The singer-songwriter joined forces with artist and producer Tom Calvert (aka Redinho), and it was a match made in Athens; the results are heavenly. Tom caught one of Σtella’s gigs on a visit to the city. He reached out, they started hanging out, and the pair soon clicked creatively. Both mention chemistry when asked about their collaboration and it’s clear, from what we hear, they had it in spades. The meld is seamless. Σtella’s songs have always riffed on American and Greek mid-century pop but Up and Away doubles down on the vintage aesthetic.

NAIMA BOCK – Giant Palm CD (Sub Pop)
Naima’s debut album Giant Palm is undoubtedly infused with the Brazilian music of her youth and regular family visits. She found inspiration in “the percussion, the melodies, chords – and particularly the poetic juxtaposition of tragedy and beauty held within the lyrics.” By the age of 15 Naima was embedded in the music scene of South-East London, eventually forming Goat Girl with school friends and touring the world. After six years playing bass in Goat Girl, Naima left the band to try something new. She set up a gardening company and started a degree at University College London in archeology because, as she jokes, “I liked being near the ground.” During this time she wrote music, played guitar, learned violin, worked with ever-shifting South-London collective Broadside Hacks, and met producer and arranger Joel Burton.

CHARLIE GABRIEL – 89 CD (Sub Pop)
I’ve been playing since I was 11 years old,” says Charlie Gabriel, the most senior member of the legendary Preservation Hall Band, “I never did anything in my life but play music. I’ve been blessed with that gift that God gave me, and I’ve tried to nurse it the best way I knew how.” Charlie Gabriel’s first professional gig dates to 1943, sitting in for his father in New Orleans’ Eureka Brass Band. As a teenager living in Detroit, Charlie played with Lionel Hampton, whose band then included a young Charles Mingus, later spending nine years with a group led by Cab Calloway drummer J.C. Heard. While he’s also fronted a bebop quintet, played and/or toured with Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennet, Aretha Franklin and many more, this is the first time his name appears on the front of a record, as a bandleader. Eighty Nine includes six standards and three newer pieces on which Gabriel is a writer: “Yellow Moon,” “The Darker It Gets” and “I Get Jealous.” The record also marks Charlie’s return to his first instrument, clarinet, on many of the tracks.

AUTOMATIC – Excess CD/LP (Stones Throw)
Excess is Automatic’s new album following their 2019 debut Signal. The band distills themes of 70s and 80s corporate excess, dystopian sci-fi and climate change into catchy, fresh alternative electronic songs sure to find fans among rock lovers of all stripes. The motorik and icy atmospheres of Automatic’s debut Signal remain, but Excess sees the band widening their scope, folding catchy pop hooks into their sound. The result is a tighter, punchier Automatic: danceable synth-punk for the end of days.

ROXY MUSIC – Avalon LP [Reissue/1982] (Republic)
Avalon is the final studio album from Roxy Music. Released in 1982, it offered a smoother, more adult-oriented sound, giving us the now iconic singles, “More Than This,” and “Avalon.” This vinyl reissue is mastered at half-speed and cut by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios. It also features revised artwork with a gloss laminated finish.

ROXY MUSIC – Flesh + Blood LP [Reissue/1980] (Republic)
Flesh + Blood gave Roxy Music their second #1 album in the UK when it was released in May 1980. It was preceded by the single “Over You,” a #5 UK hit that also provided the band with a rare entry on Billboard’s Hot 100 at #80. Flesh + Blood also included covers of The Byrds’ “Eight Miles High” and Wilson Pickett’s “In the Midnight Hour.” Each Roxy Music album has been reissued with a fresh half-speed cut by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios, London. To reflect the audio, all eight of the Roxy Music studio albums have had their artwork revised and with a gloss-laminated finish, so that each album is not just a record – it’s a piece of art.
