THIS WEEK’S NEW RELEASES

Adele19 [Reissue/2008] CD/LP (XL Recordings)
CD and vinyl reissue of Adele’s debut album. Following Adele’s graduation from the BRIT School for Performing Arts & Technology in May 2006, she began publishing songs and recorded a three-song demo for a class project and gave it to a friend who posted the demo on Myspace, where it became very successful and led to interest from XL Recordings.

The Carters (Beyoncé/JAY-Z) ‎Everything Is Love CD (Roc Nation)
“The Carters round out a trilogy of confrontational albums about their marriage with something lighter but no less resonant. It is a celebration of resilient black love and proud black extravagance.’ [BNM/8.2] — Pitchfork

Vince GuaraldiThe Complete Warner Bros. – Seven Arts Recordings 2xCD (Omnivore)
All three Warner-Seven Arts albums remastered on two CDs. Includes for previously unissued bonus tracks. In 1968, Vince Guaraldi made a label switch from his long-time home, Fantasy Records, to his new label, Warner Bros. For his inaugural album Oh, Good Grief!, on which he re-interprets his previously recorded Peanuts classics, he added electric guitar and electric harpsichord to the mix. 1969’s The Eclectic Vince Guaraldi lived up to its title and found Guaraldi experimenting with everything from a large string section, to his first recorded vocal debut (covering the singer/songwriter, Tim Hardin), to original compositions that could be described as lengthy rock jams. Guaraldi’s last album for the label and last ever album, 1970’s Alma-Ville, ranks among his best-ever albums. Six of the nine songs that appear on this ‘return to jazz’ project were Guaraldi originals and recorded with several different ensembles. Besides the original compositions, Alma-Ville finds Guaraldi covering The Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby” which had become a staple of his live performances, Duke Pearson’s “Cristo Redentor” and the Michel Legrand/Norman Gimbel song “Watch What Happens”.

Various ArtistsDisques Debs International Volume 1: An Island Story: Biguine, Afro Latin & Musique Antillaise 1960-1972 CD/2xLP (Strut)
Strut present the first ever compilation series to access the archives of one of the greatest of all French Caribbean labels, Disques Debs out of Guadeloupe. Set up by the late Henri Debs during the late ‘50s, the label and studio has continued for over 50 years, releasing over 300 7” singles and 200 LPs, covering styles varying from early biguine and bolero to zouk and reggae. Debs played a pivotal role in bringing the créole music of Guadeloupe and Martinique to a wider international audience. Volume 1 of this series marks the first decade of the label’s existence and takes in big band orchestras, home-grown stars, touring bands and a new generation that would emerge at the end of the ‘60s.

Daniel AveryQuick Eternity (Four Tet Remix) 12” (Mute)
Complimenting the long-awaited release of sophomore LP, Song For Alpha, this 12” includes new versions of the album’s majestic closer, featuring a dramatic and thought-provoking remix from Four Tet alongside a club edit of the transient and blissed out psychedelic “Quick Eternity”.

Eurythmics ‎Be Yourself Tonight [Reissue/1985] LP+MP3 (Sony Legacy)
Eurythmics ‎– Revenge [Reissue/1986] LP+MP3 (Sony Legacy)
Eurythmics ‎– Savag7 [Reissue/1985] LP+MP3 (Sony Legacy)

Johnny MarrCall The Comet LP (New Voodoo)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Recorded with his band in Manchester at Johnny Marr’s Crazy Face studios, Call The Comet is the third solo record from the Smiths guitarist and follows 2013’s critically acclaimed The Messenger and 2014’s Playland. “Call The Comet is set in the not-too-distant future” says Marr, “and is mostly concerned with the idea of an alternative society. It’s my own magic realism.” [Limited edition purple colored vinyl pressing also available.]

MndsgnSnax LP (Ringgo)
L.A. based musician and producer Ringgo Ancheta is a master of tastefully blending together R&B, soul jazz, and boogie aesthetics. Mndsgn has released three studio albums, two on Stones Throw, and the summer of 2018 finds him going back to his mixtape roots with Snax. It’s a throwback of funk, hip-hop, and jazz tracks Ringgo has reimagined, instilling a constant momentum that flows and bobs to samples by Lil Jon, Nas, and Monica. The 15-track album is what Ringgo does best: catchy, cosmic funk vibes meant for a party.

Prefuse 73Sacrifices 2xLP (Lex)
Recently released on CD – now available on 180gm vinyl. Following his detour into fractured, kaleidoscopic hip-hop with Fudge, electronic music pioneer Prefuse 73 has become progressively interested in injecting a sense of space into his characteristically complex productions. The resultant 17-track collection, Sacrifices, is akin to watching an old photograph deteriorate in one’s hands, as otherwise dense beats disintegrate into airy expanses of emotionally resonant electronics. Its effect is not unlike attempting to recall a murky memory of a dream of Guillermo Scott Herren’s earliest works, imbibed with an increased interest in the subtlety of contemporary minimalism.

Surf CurseBuds [2013] LP (Danger Collective)
Surf Curse is Nick Rattigan and Jacob Rubeck. They started the project back in 2012 in their basement in Reno, NV. Since then, the band has earned a cult following on the Los Angeles DIY scene. Their music expresses themes of young and romantic love through a cinematic lens of ’80s and arthouse movies. Surf Curse’s 2013 full-length debut Buds is available for the first time on colored vinyl.
